Illinois Democratic Primary - March 21st, 1972

1,084,734 votes -- 173 Delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 394,843 votes (36.4%) 63 delegates

Stuart Symington - 339,521 votes (31.3%) 54 delegates

George Wallace - 201,761 votes (18.6%) 32 delegates

Bill Clay - 137,761 votes (12.7%) 22 delegates

Sen. Hubert Humphrey takes the state of Illinois in an important and relatively comfortable win over Stuart Symington (3). Symington had appeared to be gaining ground and while his campaign was able to recover from a rally gone wrong in Chicago, the turnout just was not enough (6). Alabama Senator George Wallace came a distant third, with a strong base in the Little Egypt region of the state, which is culturally more similar to Kentucky than Northern Illinois (5). Finally, Bill Clay disappointed by failing to capitalize on black support in Chicago and make any waves, falling fourth (3).

---

Georgia Democratic Primary - March 21st, 1972

364,936 votes -- 54 Delegates

George Wallace - 176,629 votes (48.4%) 46 delegates

Stuart Symington - 116,050 votes (31.8%) 8 delegates

Bill Clay - 52,186 votes (14.3%)

Hubert Humphrey - 16,422 votes (4.5%)

The Georgia Primary saw extremely depressed turnout as both liberal candidates failed to make any headway in bringing out the black vote, delivering an especially crippling blow to Bill Clay who had hoped to build a coalition of black voters in Southern states (1!). Meanwhile, Hubert Humphrey’s failure to contest was made manifest in his poor showing (1!). Given the new nature of Georgia’s primary, many conservative voters, used to support the pick of the conservative Georgia Democratic Party, failed to turn out for George Wallace, banking on a win (2). Even the most energized and organized of the campaigns, the Symington campaign, seemingly failed to make waves, though they fared the best and saw a decent last minute boost for it (4).

---

Of the two primaries, Illinois was the major story. Humphrey’s win once again established him as the main challenger to Wallace as Symington continued a second place streak. Second place is nice, but now four primaries in, continual losses will continue to harm the Missouri Senator. Wallace’s victory in Georgia is a decent headline for him as it is the first solidly convincing win of the season, but diminished turnout will undoubtedly weaken the strength of the story. Still, Humphrey and Wallace remain the only candidates to win primaries, a crucial mark of distinguishment in the early primary season.

Schmooze (2): The delegation accidentally includes pork! Oy vey.

Schmooze (7): The dinner goes over miraculously, no one remembers anything about schmeared salmon.

Schmooze (1!): Unfortunately, California is among the more conservative state parties. And when Javits makes jokes at the expense of Leader Goldwater and Governor Reagan, he is basically booted from the Golden State.

Overall: -6. Javits angers conservatives and trips up in the kosher department.

3. Wisconsin - Rally

Symington rallies in Green Bay, where he speaks about the importance of the state's agriculture at a national and international scale and how his work with the Farm Bill positively benefited the state.

Rally (1!): Symington oversteps! His rally goes haywire as he is inundated by a fired up base of Wallacite supporters. He is essentially chased out of the state.

Influence (1!): Proxmire refuses to endorse Symington and some comments of his taken in private in which he calls Symington "a man of extreme dullor" and commends Wallace for his ability to tap into the working class with his calls for law and order, however much he may personally disagree with the Senator, are published in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Rally (2): Unfortunately, Symington's pitch doesn't click as Wallace fever on social issues seems to have taken hold of the Wisconsin working class.

Overall: -13. Symington's fortunes are seemingly blown up by the socially conservative tide moving across both the South and Rust Belt.

Clay rallies in Wisconsin

Rally (5): Clay's rally is not a flop by any measure but he has trouble getting major turnout in a strongly conservative state like South Carolina.

Influence (7): Civil Rights groups love Clay, but their strength in South Carolina is not as big as the conservative party establishment.

Rally (5): An average rally in Wisconsin.

Overall: +2. Clay has a decent week, trending positively but mostly falling from the headlines.

Rally (6): A decent day in South Carolina.

Rally (1!): For whatever reason, North Carolina just isn't feeling any of the candidates this week.

Rally (8): And Wallace rolls along in Wisconsin!

Overall: -1. Wallace backslides ever so slightly nationally, muting some of his momentum from last week.

Rally (3): Humphrey's aggression still doesn't connect with the people like Wallace's.

Influence (2): And he continues to struggle with union.s

Schmooze (6): Humphrey's best bet with is with the establishment. And indeed, he does well.

Overall: -4. Humphrey has a drab week as well.

Tough week for the field.

South Carolina Democratic Primary - March 28th, 1972

447,829 votes -- 32 delegates

George Wallace - 259,293 votes (57.9%) 32 delegates

Stuart Symington - 89,566 votes (20.0%)

Bill Clay - 51,948 votes (11.6%)

Hubert Humphrey - 47,022 votes (10.5%)

Sen. George Wallace has won a landslide victory in the Palmetto State of South Carolina, his conservative mobilization kicked it into high gear as this deeply conservative state came in droves, signalling a consolidation of support in the South (7). Congressman Bill Clay did surprise many analysts by squeaking into 3rd place with an impressive black turnout, even against most odds (9). His sneaks past other liberal Hubert Humphrey who limped to fourth after a disappointing showing across the South so far (4). Finally, Stuart Symington failed to make very many waves, just hitting 20% after suffering a tough week (6). The turnout was incredibly high for this primary and it will very likely give Wallace some solid momentum going into April and may just be a bellwether for the South.

Senator Humphrey will purchase some national airtime to display an ad created by his campaign. The ad will portray Hubert Humphrey as a champion for the working man, showcasing his support for increasing the minimum wage, the recent OSHA bill, and increases to social security. The ad will additionally contrast Humphrey to Wallace, who is opposed to all of these things. (Influence - Working Class)

Humphrey will continue to work behind the scenes to obtain the support of the party's elite, knowing that this battle is likely to reach the convention. (Influence - Party Bosses)

Lastly, the former VP will take time to hold a Rally in the great cheese state, enjoying some mozzarella and praising the state's citizenry as fine examples of how the working and middle class make up the backbone of America. (Rally - Wisconsin)

Poll:

Nevada Dem Primary

Rally (6): The rally saves face from the last disaster but is no great breakthrough.

Influence (3): Cannon is the most conservative member of the Senate Moderate Democrats, so it's no surprise when he declines Symington's request in favor of seeing if conservative Democrats can't in fact win over the party. It's unlikely he'd go so far as endorsing Wallace, but his silence is palpable.

Influence (7): Yarborough is a liberal who often opposed Symington's agenda. While stopping short of an endorsement for LBJ's candidacy for Symington, he will tell his supporters that they must do what they can to stop Wallace, be it throuh Johnson or Humphrey.

Overall: +1. A very bland week is a huge improvement from last week but not enough to quite rectify the bleeding entirely.

Influence (2): The national airtime comes off as pandery, Humphrey is doing seriously poorly with the working class and their unions over a string of outreach, it could soon reach critical mass.

Influence (7): Humphrey is comfortable with the bosses and they with him.

Rally (7): A solid rally in Wisconsin, hopefully it will be enough to win the state back over.

Overall: +1. A bland week for Humphrey as well.

Clay holds a rally in St. Louis where he announces his withdrawal from the race. He states how he is amazed by the support he has received and thanks his supporters, citing how they've made history. He urges his supporters to vote for Hubert Humphrey.

Endorsement (19/20): Clay's rally goes exceedingly well! Humphrey by and large sees the black influence transferred to him. While that same fire can never be totally preserved, Clay did his damndest to give Humphrey a boost, only time will tell if Clay had enough institutional support for it to move the needle significantly.

Rally (2): Then again, sometimes not so much.

Rally (10!): And stir the people they do: North Carolina is on its feet for Wallace in the closing days  of the campaign.

Overall: +6. Wallace has tapped into some real working class and conservative anger and anxiety, it allows his campaign to keep up the momentum.

(9): The UN Summit goes well and Nixon looks strong. Unfortunately, the situation with the Khmer is probably too far gone at this point for any miracles. The Chinese have talked and talked, they are tired of talking.

Javits Turn

Influence (7+1!+1!): Unfortunately, while the meeting begins well, it goes off the rails when Javits begins to commit a few social faux pas surrounding certain areas in which he is lacking in his faith knowledge. The leaders are not impressed.

Wisconsin Democratic Primary - April 4th, 1972

714,294 votes -- 67 Delegates

George Wallace - 276,322 votes (38.7%) 36 delegates

Hubert Humphrey -  275,003 votes (38.5%) 31 delegates

Stuart Symington - 162,859 votes (22.8%)

The Wisconsin primary went well into the night. After the endorsement of Bill Clay, many assumed Humphrey would surge to first. Indeed, he surged, but George Wallace's campaign of right-wing populism and playing into the anxieties of the working class was not to be underestimated. Ultimately, the campaign of Humphrey would have a decent turnout day (5) while Wallace (3) and Symington lagged (3). However, Wallace's lead proved to be too much for a small turnout edge and endorsement to best. Wallace would win his first Northern state and maintain his primary win streak.

North Carolina Democratic Primary - April 4th, 1972

528,932 votes -- 64 Delegates

George Wallace - 238,019 votes (45.0%) 34 delegates

Stuart Symington - 215,276 votes (40.7%) 30 delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 75,637 votes (14.3%)

The North Carolina primary was set to be a Wallace landslide. And while the Alabama Senator would win less narrowly then Wisconsin, Stuart Symington's impressive comeback from the brink of destruction speaks to his strength in the South, particularly when compared to Humphrey. Humphrey and Wallace's campaigns both saw major snafus as they had systematic failures to get their demographics to the polls (1!). Meanwhile, Symington was effectively able to win over the hearts and minds of moderate farmers and suburbanites and get them out in droves (10!).

---

Today was a mixed bag for the field. The biggest winner, of course, both in delegates and coverage is George Wallace. Wallace held North Carolina but also won Wisconsin, proving his strength from 1968 was not a flop and beating out his closest liberal challenge. Wallace walks out to today with 2 important wins. Still, there is a great deal of hope to be had for the other two candidates. Wisconsin was close, Hubert Humphrey has proven to have a certain connection with black voters which has managed to materialize since Bill Clay left the race. And Stuart Symington has likely just kept a hemmoraghing campaign on life support and even brought it back to life in the South where he remains competitive with Wallace, who was unable to land the knock out blow tonight in the Tar Heel State/
