Poll Request among all Americans

Has your opinion of Jacob Javits gone up, or down since he began his campaign for the Vice Presidency?

My opinion of him has improved

My opinion of him has decreased

My opinion of him is the same

I don't know who he his

Javits schmoozes with the NYGOP, hoping to put the Buddhist thing behind him.

Javits asks Betty Ford for her endorsement, hoping her support will propel him in the eyes of women rights advocates, and liberals.

The BRC releases a pamphlet detailing all the Civil Rights programs supported, and advocated for by the Republican party, from the abolition of Slavery to  the Minority Owned Small Business Grant (Influence Blacks)

Senator Humphrey will spend time in Maryland once again, driving home his message of electability in what is becoming an increasingly winnable election for the Democrats in the fall. (Rally - Maryland)

Former VP Humphrey will rally once more in Maryland, denouncing George Wallace for refusing to sufficiently denounce his extremist segregationist and racist rhetoric and policy as Governor of Alabama. (Rally - Maryland)

Finally, we are going back on our hands and knees to the party bosses. Each party boss who shows up gets exactly one triple H poem dedicated to them and their honor. (Influence - Party Bosses)

Rally (3): They're not terrible appearances but they're just not lighting any sparks.

Rally (4): Humphrey's passion is admirable but it's just not getting through over the din of Wallace's populism.

Influence (1!): Getting on your hands and knees is a little forward for a man in 1972. Do better. And poetry is only solidifies the question everyone is asking. Is Humphrey, ya know?

Overall: -8. Coming off a cold streak in the primaries and last week, Humphrey needed a big move to stop his decline. He did not get one.

Schmooze (3): He does, only to replace it with a Hindu thing.

Endorsement (10!): He gets it! Most people are wondering, who? But when Betty Ford makes her debut into the political foray, she is lionized for her incredibly speaking ability. Some say she even overshadows her husband, the Speaker.

Influence (1!): Try again next time.

Overall: -2. The unknown Ford's dazzling debut makes up for the continual failures on the part of the Javits campaign HQ.

Rally (3): Maryland is slightly less conservative than the rest of the Upper South, having much of a Mid-Atlantic bend. That message about the "way of life" doesn't quite click though.

Rally (6): But for a state with many suburban centers, "law and order" is much more palatable.

Influence (10!): Governor Byrd gives a glowing endorsement and mobilizes his entire machine to do whatever is necessary to ensure Wallace takes Virginia by a landslide.

Overall: +5. Wallace continues his upward trend with a strong endorsement from Byrd, capitalizing on his previous primary momentum.

Maryland Democratic Primary - May 16th, 1972

568,107 votes -- 53 delegates

George Wallace - 343,705 votes (60.5%) 49 delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 224,402 votes (39.5%) 4 delegates

George Wallace wins a sound victory in the Maryland primary as he consolidates his position as frontrunner on the backs of conservative suburbanites who are beginning to find his candidacy more and more digestable (6). Hubert Humphrey, on the other hand, has been putting a lot of firepower into Maryland, hoping to turn Wallace's momentum around. Unfortunately, his campaign has been dogged by atrophying support and slowing momentum and was unable to materialize such a win (4).

---

Virginia Democratic Primary - May 16th, 1972

479,218 votes -- 54 delegates

George Wallace - 346,475 votes (72.3%) 54 delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 132,743 votes (27.7%)

Virginia was a tad scrappier than most on the ground anticipating. Wallace was able to cruise to a bruising victory with a relatively sleep campaign on the ground consistent almost entirely of Byrd Machine infrastructure (2). Meanwhile the Humphrey campaign was able to inject a little energy at least around the Richmond area and DC suburbs where some urban liberals and black voters were encouraged to turnout, even if only to be crushed in the end (7).

---

Hubert Humphrey seemingly put a lot of stock in the Maryland primary, unfortunately his help did not come. Wallace locks down two more important victories and just north of 100 delegates. Meanwhile, Humphrey seems to be seriously losing steam as Wallace's performances both on the campaign trail and at the ballot box are seeming to consolidate his position as a much clearer frontrunner than a few weeks ago.

Up Next: Campaign turn out to Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana Primaries

Alright folks, we're getting into the final stretch of it! At the conclusion of this turn will be the Deep South primaries, there will then be another turn with no primary at its conclusion and that will be followed by the final contest day which includes, among others, California! Following the June 6th primaries, we will move into the summer nominating conventions, the DNC and RNC, and after that I will be collecting downballot candidates (this means my request for downballot candidates is now getting very real, they are going to be due soon!) Once all that jazz is settled, we'll be onto the general election before you know it!

Secret Call from McCloskey’s jail cell

McCloskey: And you can do that?

[Secret]

McCloskey: I don’t know if I have the connections to make that work though.

[Secret]

McCloskey: Still, it’s only a few months away. How will I get one of my men there in time?

[Secret]

McCloskey: I see. Ok, I can do this for you. You know what the price will be, right?

[Secret]

McCloskey: Well as long as we are in agreement, then you have a deal. I’ll take care of your little problem, and you’ll take care of mine.

[Secret]

McCloskey: Goodbye, Mr. President.

[Phone Call Ended]

1. Humphrey will meet again with the party bosses, hoping that despite his several missteps he can finally make it up to them and prove he's the right candidate at the convention.

2. Again, Humphrey will meet with the party bosses.

3. Humphrey will rally in California! Here, he'll speak out in LA on the importance of combating the growing homeless problem in America with sensible investments in local infrastructure like homeless shelters and welfare for our nation's poorest citizens to get them back on their feet.

Javits quietly drops his Vice Presidential campaign, fearing that it may harm his future political prospects. He gives Spiro Agnew a call, and jokingly congratulates him on his 'victory'.

Influence (1!): He doesn't!

Influence (10!): But then he does?

Rally (9): A strong rally from Humphrey in the Golden State, it looks like it's going to be a race.

Overall: +4. Humphrey breaks his cold streak on the campaign but it's not enough to totally rescue him from his trajectory.

Rally (10!): And Wallace is greeted as the Democratic frontrunner when he arrives in California, the base is big!

Influence (3): Can you say demurred once more? I sure can! Yorty seems to be waiting to the last possible moment to make a decision.

Rally (8): And it's a strong message on which to focus for Wallace.

Overall: +7. And Wallace continues his hot streak on the campaign trail!

Mississippi Democratic Primary - May 23rd, 1972

319,282 votes -- 25 delegates

George Wallace - 265,962 votes (83.3%) 25 delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 53,320 votes (16.7%)

As expected the Mississippi delegation lined firmly up behind Wallace after a thumping primary win. The Wallace campaign put up mediocre effort and the campaign relied solely on the state party apparatus (4). The Humphrey campaign meanwhile did manage to bring a few new voters to the primary but not nearly enough to beat the machine (7).

---

Louisiana Democratic Primary - May 23rd, 1972

470,603 votes -- 34 delegates

George Wallace - 388,247 votes (82.5%) 34 delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 82,356 votes (17.5%)

Both campaigns achieved an unexpected turnout in Louisiana (3). Of course, this severely benefited George Wallace who, hot off a successful rally just before the primary was in a supreme position to win the state in a landslide. Indeed, the fellow Deep Southerner has carried the state quite successfully.

---

Alabama Democratic Primary - May 23rd, 1972

396,225 votes -- 37 delegates

George Wallace - 372,452 votes (94.0%) 37 delegates

Hubert Humphrey - 23,773 votes (6.0%)

Alabama was a slum dunk if there ever was such an electoral event. The former Governor and current Senator was able to effectively mobilize his base, it was nothing special but it got the job done (5). The trouble particularly came, though, for Humphrey as Alabama remains a state with virtually no real reliable base of black voters and this base of support failed to materialize entirely for Humphrey as it had in some meager way in Louisiana and Mississippi (1!).

---

The 3 Deep Southern primaries amounted to a total rout for Senator Wallace. While not unexpected, these primaries seriously solidify his positon as the commonly accepted frontrunner and provide him with 3 more wins as we draw closer to the final contests of the primary season. This marks the seventh consecutive win for Wallace. While Humphrey did not crash and burn on the campaign trail this week, he is seriously suffering in the momentum department due to lacking primary performances.

Up Next: Campaigning turn out to May 30th, 1972

Alright, this next turn will be a pure campaigning turn which means hopefully we can crank it out tomorrow morning some time. Then, after that, we will have another campaigning turn with the four above primaries at the end of those festivities. Once those primaries have concluded, I'll put up a post walking you through the summer nominating conventions (they will be remarkably similar to 1968!). After that, we'll be getting into conventions and downballot primaries, so look alive, the general election of 1972 is almost here! As always, happy flavamaking and may the dice be ever in your flava!

Rally (4): Not a terrible rally but certainly not the enthusiasm to which the Wallace campaign is accustomed.

Influence (7): After delaying and delaying, Yorty will agree to take Wallace's place on the ballot and stand in his stead as a favorite so in the California primary.

Influence (10!): As Wallace consolidates his position as frontrunner, many moderate Democrats are coming to terms with the very real possibility of supporting him as their nominee, it is no longer nearly as unthinkable as it was in February. Many moderates are now even opting for Wallace over Humphrey.

Overall: +7. Wallace just keeps on rolling as he jumps in moderate support and secures key support from Senator Yorty ahead of the California primary.

Rally (1!): Humphrey is booed off the stage at the mention of Johnson, who has seriously fallen in popularity. Expanding the Great Society is not at the forefront of the country's mind.

Influence (10!): Minish endorses Humphrey in full force and will be sure to give Wallace hell ahead of the New Jersey primary.

Rally (4): The rally is not terrible but the reception is relatively lukewarm.

Overall: -1. Humphrey's week is saved by Minish but he continues to fall deeper into the rut of his underdog status.
